Youth Programs Policy – Overview

The Youth Programs Policy supports the ongoing success of youth programs as well as the safety and protection of non-student minors and employees at Georgia Tech.  Continue reading for information and resources to guide you through the policy and process.

What is the Youth Programs Policy?
The Youth Programs policy outlines requirements for Georgia Tech entities hosting youth programs on- and off-campus, and third-party entities organizing youth programs on-campus. You can find the policy here, and the Youth Programs website with resources and information here

What is a Youth Program?
Often, people think “youth program” is synonymous with a camp, or day program, and while those represent some youth programs, other examples include research internships, merit badge clinics, and many others. If your department or lab is organizing an internship or event, or if a high school student reaches out to  you may be hosting a youth program. Please review the Youth Programs Policy in full and reach out with any specific questions. Youth Programs Compliance is available for brainstorming support as well.

What am I required to do?
Departments, labs, or employees interested in planning youth programs are encouraged to participate in a training to ensure they have an understanding of the policy and procedural requirements (summarized below) for organizing a youth program. Trainings last about 45 minutes and are hosted as webinars to accommodate busy schedules. You can RSVP for a training here. Trainings or consultations can also be requested for specific units or programs to align with busy schedules.

Programs are required to certify compliance with this policy and that their youth program has considered and met the following criteria in the planning of the program:

  • Register annually;

  • Pre-screening, background checks, and training of all staff and volunteers with direct contact with minors;

  • Appropriate staffing and supervision ratios by age range;

  • Safety and security planning;

  • Response protocols for injuries, illness, participant misconduct, and staff misconduct

  • Transportation and housing needs

  • Participation requirement forms

  • Licensing requirements of state and federal agencies
